The 1st Annual Detroit Book Festival was held on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Eastern Market. It had a bit of something for everyone: old books, new books, rare books, comic books, children’s books, vinyl records, posters, newspapers, magazines, vintage board games, food trucks, beer, and a DJ. Mixed in between the lines were authors.
It reminded me of the Motor City Comic-Con we attended a few years ago, minus the costumes.
Detroit Book Festival
AKA the Detroit Festival of Books, was organized by the Book Club of Detroit and sponsored by Eastern Market. It was free and it was a hit! The 2nd Annual Detroit Festival of Books is scheduled for Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Eastern Market.
Authors
There were many authors eager to chat and share their story. If you asked, they would sign their books for you too. Bonus! This is the legendary Herb Boyd with his book ‘Black Detroit’.
Greg Fournier was showcasing his book about the notorious John Michael Collins called ‘Terror In Ypsilanti’.
Author La Leta Dorinda Williams was more than happy to say hello and talk about writing.
Randy Pearson was offering up some fun reads such as ‘Tell Me a Story’ which he wrote for his wife.
Books
Is there such a thing as too many books? Nope, we didn’t think so either.
Comics
Newspapers
Old and Rare Stuff
Vinyl
While the main theme was books, there were also a couple of vendors selling records. This included Detroit’s own Hold Fast Vinyl which had some great local spins available.
Black Lotus Brewing was serving beverages, Dj Zig-Zag was playing tunes and there were food carts for those needing lunch. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the “D”. Be sure to check out more photos of the Detroit Festival of Books in our gallery.
