Electric Huldra and Friends Light Up the Regal Beagle
When you see a stacked lineup featuring Electric Huldra, Good Man’s Brother, and Velvet Snakes on the same bill, you get your ass down to that show. Even better, when you see that said show is happening at Michigan’s preeminent dive bar, The Regal Beagle, you double down on getting your ass to the show. Clearly, everyone also got the memo on this rock extravaganza as I walked in just after doors opened and the bar was nearly full. With a tall boy of PBR in hand, I moseyed up to the stage and prepared to wave the freak flag of Ypsilanti rock.
Velvet Snakes
Velvet Snakes kicked off this night of rock fury. Loud, gritty, and groovy, Velvet Snakes are what your grandma may have called Acid Rock back in the day. Playing fuzzy garage rock with a dash of psychedelic buzz, Velvet Snakes drew us in with a powerful set of music. Fans of garage rock masters such as The Stooges, The Godz, and The Seeds would be well advised to check out the Velvet Snakes.
Good Man’s Brother
When the hard rocking grooves of Grand Funk and BTO meet the stoner goodness of Red Fang and Kyuss, you’ve got Good Man’s Brother. The band features the twin guitar attack of Johnny Scott and Adam Wilkinson with the foot-stomping and mean rhythm section of Sean Branham and Hriday Erickson. Together, these guys are hard rock perfection. Along with killer originals, they threw in a dynamite cover of “N.I.B.” by Black Sabbath. For a special treat, Electric Huldra’s Bobby Marks provided lead vocals on the cover of Grand Funk’s “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother.” Can’t wait for these guys to get back in the studio to cut a full album for us to enjoy.
Electric Huldra
Electric Huldra rounded out the evening of rock music rooted in Ypsilanti. This band never fails to impress me, and tonight, they were pure fire. Providing soaring soulful vocals and a wailing guitar is Bobby Marks. Keeping the low-end hammering and providing brilliant backing vocals is TJ Hufford. In the driver’s seat on the drum kit is the sensational Tyler Sauerwein. They ripped into a number of their full-throttle rockers, such as “Dirty Boots” and a new tune called “Imp.” A high-energy power trio, Electric Huldra, commanded the stage with their fist-pumping music riddled with melodic hooks.
In an ode to the old school, Electric Huldra jammed a burning cover of “Rock Bottom” by UFO. I’m sure Phil Mogg and Pete Way would have approved with fists in the air. While this cover was great, the cherry on top was their last song, a cover of Molly Hatchet’s “Flirtin’ With Disaster,” where they pulled in Johnny Scott from Good Man’s Brother to provide the needed twin guitar onslaught—a damn fine ending to a damn fine show.
