It’s lunchtime on a beautiful summer’s day in Ann Arbor. Any idea what that means? It means its time for SONIC LUNCH! This wonderful free outdoor music series brought the Wild Feathers into town to provide a taste of some Nashville rock last Thursday (26-Jun-2014).
Sonic Lunch
If you aren’t from town or live in town under a stone, Sonic Lunch is a free music sponsored by Bank Of Ann Arbor that takes place in Liberty Plaza (at the corner of Liberty and Division). Ann Arbor’s 107one provides promotional support and Martin Bandyke (Morning DJ) hosts each show. Sonic Lunch also serves up a local restaurant offering some tasty lunch options for you to purchase and enjoy while you are grooving to the music!
Wild Feathers
I had listened to one song by the Wild Feathers as I was pursuing the Sonic Lunch concert menu and that was all it took to add this baby to my calendar!
The first thing you’ll notice about the Wild Feathers is that they line up together. I don’t think I’ve seen a rock band in that formation before. You typically see that in a country or bluegrass setting. It was kind of a nice touch and I’m sure it says a bit about the band’s ethos.
The Wild Feathers sound is rock with a bit of country feel. That could be the Nashville dripping over the Texas rock roots. Each of the four guitarists are great singers and could stand alone on their own, but they sing much of their music in harmony. This had me thinking of other great acts like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young or The Eagles.
They played just about every song off their self-titled debut album. The opening and hard driving (no pun intended), Hard Wind, the achingly beautiful If You Don’t Love Me, and Tom Petty-esque Hard Times were just some of the highlights. They also include an excellent cover of Hey, Hey What Can I Do by Led Zepplin.
Summer is grand and with a free concert for lunch, then your day just turned to gold. The Wild Feathers were great live and I highly recommend checking them out if they are in your neighborhood. In the meantime, pop into the gallery to see some more pics!
