A hot summer night of storytelling through music, thanks to the Bacon Brothers at Warner Vineyards.

The Bacon Brothers at Warner Vineyards
This may have been our first time in Paw Paw. It took our friend Nina Sophia opening up for the Bacon Brothers to get us out there finally. We went in without ever experiencing the music of the Bacon Brothers. Of course, we were well-versed in the acting career of one of the brothers, but the music is different. To say we were intrigued was an understatement. At the time, we just hoped the rain clouds would hold off and that we wouldn’t melt waiting to hear the bands.
If you are looking for a fantastic venue for a small outdoor concert, you can’t go wrong with Warner Vineyards. Their space is amazing, with a beautiful covered amphitheater next to their brew haus and wine tasting space. The outdoor area is festooned with tables that can be reserved for shows. We opted for the general admission area near the stage (standing room only). However, most of the crowd (which I heard was over 1000 people) found spots for their lawn chairs in the space across the river, which bisects the property.

With some delicious beverages in hand, we made our way close to the stage for the show. With all the music to come being relatively unknown to us, the feeling of anticipation was electric. The big question was if these bands could deliver.
Kyle Brown and the Human Condition
First up was a stripped-down version of Kyle Brown and the Human Condition. I say stripped down, as the band consisted of Kyle Brown and Nina Sophia. We’ve been long-time fans of Nina and can happily report that her joining the Human Condition is a match made in heaven.

Kyle and Nina traded off lead vocals, showcasing new music for their upcoming album. The music is rooted in Americana, yet weaves rich textures of jazz, soul, rhythm, and blues into a tapestry of sonic bliss. Using just two guitars and their harmonized vocals, Kyle and Nina’s performance felt uplifting and refreshing.
The Pernikoff Brothers
While dark clouds threatened rain, this didn’t stop the Pernikoff Brothers. Hailing from St. Louis, the band includes Tom Pernikoff (vocals/guitar), Rick Pernikoff (vocals/bass), and Kevin Bowers (drums). They played a vibrant set of original music that kept the storms at bay.
Their set consisted of a number of new songs from their latest album, Ah Londres, which they recorded at the famed Abbey Road studios in London. As a new listener, I was enthralled with their invigorating rhymes and lush melodies. Strong and resonant vocals lift their performance up high. I found myself feeling relaxed and at home as the Pernikoff Brothers bathed us in their soulful music. If you are a fan of bands such as the Dave Matthews Band and Mumford & Sons, you’ll love the Pernikoff Brothers.

The Bacon Brothers
The smattering of clouds with dapples of rain gave way as the Bacon Brothers took to the stage. Kicking off in high gear with the Caribbean-influenced “Let Me Happen To You Girl”, the band’s exuberance was powerful enough to clear the skies and set the tone for a vivacious evening. Up front and trading off lead vocal duties are Michael and Kevin Bacon. Locking down pulsing rhythms is Paul Guzzone (bass) and Frank Vilardi (drums). Tim Quick sprinkled in some tasty licks on lead guitar. Filling the harmonic spaces with radiant keyboards and backing vocals is Mare Robinson.

Touching on songs that span their twelve studio albums, including their latest Ballad of the Brothers, released in 2024, you realize the musical depth and diversity of the Bacon Brothers. With lyrical content deeply rooted in the storytelling traditions of folk and country, the music is a vivid and intriguing mix of rock, R&B, and country. As revealed by the opening song, as well as songs such as “My Old Bronco.” The Bacon Brothers don’t shy away from throwing in some Latin and Caribbean spices into their musical gumbo.

The Bacon Brothers put on an extremely enjoyable show. The band’s performance was stellar, with each song being played tight and in the pocket. Michael and Kevin are engaging front men, offering insightful and humorous banter between songs. They are also talented musicians playing a variety of instruments, with Michael on guitar, autoharp, cello, and ukulele, and Kevin handling guitar, harmonica, hand drum, and ukulele.
Clearly, The Bacon Brothers are having a blast playing music together and with their band. Their enthusiasm spreads like wildfire through the audience. You felt like you are part of something special, and that feeling is exhilarating. The Bacon Brothers gave us a fantastic evening to remember.
