Ziggy’s Rocks!

It took the terrific combination of Ladyship Warship, Angel of Mars, and Soot to rectify a serious deficiency in my rock and roll life. You see, friends, I had never been to Ziggy’s in Ypsilanti before this evening. I know, WTF, right?

You see, I dig Ypsi. I went to college in Ypsi. People I love live in Ypsi. But for some reason, competing shows have led me everywhere else but Ziggy’s. Well, damn it, that had to change. Thanks to this excellent lineup, I enjoy a night of marvelous music in this fabulous venue. The beer prices are great, the ambiance is amazing, and the staff are fantastic. Plus, I got to see a bunch of great friends who had stopped in at their local rock oasis. I will definitely be back.

Ladyship Warship

It feels right that the first band I’d see at Ziggy’s would be Ladyship Warship. They are the definition of indie rock music, their music shimmering like a heat haze. Kristin’s drums accelerate your pulse as EZ’s guitar burns with the close, hot heat of a Detroit summer. Ladyship Warship’s performance at Ziggy’s wasn’t just compelling – it was vital. It felt as if my life depended on the beckoning beat, the untamed melodies, and the supreme mystical transference of psychic energy from the stage.

Angel of Mars

The heaviness of the music by Angel of Mars leads straight into the heart of a supermassive black hole. Using phenomenal Sabbath-inspired riffs paired with exquisite melodic vocals, their performance at Ziggy’s was a tour de force. Rich Hartwick’s bass and Angie Manly’s drums enveloped us in sonic waves that hit like a punch on the song “Solar Flare.” Andy and Terri Gould’s guitars felt immensely powerful as they roared through us on “Devlin.” Terri’s magnificent vocals and her harmonies with Angie on backing vocals compelled you to fall to your knees in rapture. Angel of Mars left us glowing with the invisible might of a thousand suns.

Soot

Ratcheting up the power swell inside of Ziggy’s was Soot. This was my first exposure to the band, and it won’t be the last. They came out swinging with mighty grooves propelled by crashing drums, snarling guitar, and vicious bass riffs. Soot’s vibe is grungy riffs with facets of doom burning like a bonfire. Their fiery intensity reminded me of bands like Clutch, High On Fire, and Orange Goblin. With mammoth riffs and crushing rhythms, Soot is the definition of heavy and hard rock music.
