Memories of in-store meet and greets came flooding back as we rocked out at Flipside Records in Berkley with Carbon Decoy, Ladyship Warship, and The Lucid Furs.
Rocking out at Flipside Records
I thought to myself, “That is so damn cool,” when I saw the flyer where Flipside Records announced a rock show with Ladyship Warship, Carbon Decoy, and The Lucid Furs. A rock show inside of a record store! I immediately thought of the old days of going to a record store to meet a band and have them sign your stuff. However, I’d never witnessed a show at a record store. The thought of rocking out in a record store immediately brought to mind seeing this video of Deftones jamming in a record store!
Shopping at Flipside
They have a great selection of new and used records that span genres at Flipside. For fans of metal and punk, the selections are superb. A key feature of buying at Flipside is their pride in offering quality used records. They run around $10-15, and all of them are in great condition. They also have excellent prices on new discs, often 10% to 15% below what you’d find elsewhere. I couldn’t walk out empty-handed, so I scored some gems to add to the collection. Another bonus is that the crew at Flipside are super helpful. If you can’t find what you are after, they will dig to find it for you.
In addition to records, you can find used equipment (turntables, cassette decks, stereos), collectibles, and more. These little pigs were on the counter and seemed to be having a great time. It could have been the excitement of rocking out in a record store; I just don’t know. Clearly, love is in the air at Flipside Records.
Carbon Decoy
Up first were the psychedelic blues prodigies in Carbon Decoy. There was a smattering of folks in the room. Once Carbon Decoy started to jam, they began to pour in. You can’t blame them, as the potent grooves of Carbon Decoy are commanding. With Casey’s beckoning voice and drums, Earl’s lysergic riffs, and Jared’s captivating bass, this band is supremely positioned to realign your mind with a mystical musical experience. Their music, particularly from their outstanding Superstition Plagues the Purity of All record, resonated with divine power at Flipside Records on this glorious Sunday afternoon.
Ladyship Warship
Primal, urgent, and infectious. No, I’m not talking about some superbug; I’m talking about the music of Ladyship Warship. EZ rocked his mandocello effortlessly, casting sonorous riffs that you could feel. Kristin’s booming drums added to the insistent might of the music, forcing us to move. Ladyship Warship jammed some of my favorites, including “The Abyss Stares Back” from their self-titled EP and “Get Me Outta Here” off of the Possum Nova EP. They also cranked out new tunes, such as the rocking “Rita’s Last Ride” inspired by Brenda and my adventures with a van we named “Rita.” Without a doubt, Ladyship Warship had the crowd stoked with one more band yet to come.
The Lucid Furs
Capping off an afternoon of rock at Flipside Records were The Lucid Furs. My lord, this band is marvelous. Self-described freak rock is heavy psych blues designed to elevate your soul. Karen’s fiery vocals burn with brilliance. Dan propelled the band with lusty beats that threatened to damn your soul. Keeping the low-end vibes meaty and rich was Matt on the bass. In a study of ecstatic and sensual riffage, Gordy seared our synapse with his guitar. The Lucid Furs wrapped up a powerhouse performance with the sly jam called “Smoke Em If You Got Em” off their No God? No Problem album. The Lucid Furs have a new album in the wings, and I can’t wait to check it out.
