We traveled to the legendary Cadieux Cafe for live music from three dynamic duos: Girl Fight, Hail Alien, and Ladyship Warship
LadyShip Warship, Hail Alien, and Girl Fight at Cadieux Cafe
With COVID restrictions lifted, it felt exhilarating walking into the Cadieux Cafe’s backyard stage to check out live music again. This was only our second show this year after seeing Plague Years at Dark Horse on a snowy April 4-20. Talking with EZ and Kristin from LadyShip Warship, we laughed at being able to see each other in the “real world”.
Nø Experience and a Pop-up Bazaar
Tonight’s show was promoted by Nø Experience, a media company in Detroit led by Spencer Rogers (also in Hail Alien). They are working hard in the DIY space to live stream shows and promote local arts. Part of tonight’s gig includes a pop-up vendor sale. Before and between sets, you could browse a super collection of records from Village Vinyl.
Need some original art to put a serious dash of wow into your living room, then grab a print by Michelle Thibodeau of Planet Skull (also in the super cool Cult of SpaceSkull and Dear Darkness).
For some fresh art with vintage appeal, check out Beth Amber collage art. The Lemmy candle would make for an awesome Christmas gift. Just saying.
I really wanted to try out the overdrive pedal by Zug Island Pedals. However, I lost track of time and didn’t make it back to plug-in and rock out. These little pedals look cool and from a video, I saw they sound awesome. I may have to get one. Can you really have too many pedals? (the answer is no, no you can’t have too many pedals)
Girl Fight
The first of three dynamic duos is Girl Fight from Detroit. Jacob and Ellen may look unassuming at first glance, but looks can be deceiving. Soaked in raw emotion, Girl Fight is a tsunami of brilliant punk rock. They had people on their feet and moving within minutes. Smiling faces blissfully embracing the tenacious roar of Girl Fight was a joy to witness.
Hail Alien
Gritty guitar, snarling vocals, and steamroller drums coalesce into the punk fury of Hail Alien. Spencer (guitar/vocals) and Matt (drums) are a powerful tag team. The foundation of driving drums is layered with thick and fuzzy guitars. Their cover of “Last Caress” by the Misfits was fantastic with Jacob from Girl Fight joining on vocals. The Aliens won with a feisty feast of punk.
Ladyship Warship
The sun slipped over the horizon and it was time for Ladyship Warship. Kristin and EZ pour themselves into the music. The delta mud oozed on “The Earth Opened Up”. The compelling sideways swing within the cover of Bob Dylan’s “High Water” electrified the stage.
A highlight was Ladyship Warship’s cover of “Higgs Boson Blues” by Nick Cave. They nailed this one with a brooding bite. Their set included a few new tunes of primal rock and roll. Sounds like a new release will be sailing in soon.
Pictures
On this night we forgot our pain and loss from the pandemic. The healing communion of rock music spoke to our indispensable need for community and shared experience. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this night great. Drop by the galleries for more photos of Girl Fight, Hail Alien, and Ladyship Warship
