Decibel Magazine Tour Unleashes Metal Onslaught in Pontiac
On a bleak and sodden Sunday in Michigan, the metal community gathered at the Crofoot in Pontiac as the Decibel Magazine Tour brought a masterclass in sonic destruction. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Cryptopsy’s landmark technical death metal masterpiece, None So Vile, the night was a relentless celebration of extreme music, supported by a stacked lineup of heavy hitters.
Lansing’s own Recorruptor kicked off the evening, blasting into a short but fierce set of malicious metal. Leaning heavily into their latest release, Sorrow Will Drown Us All, they quickly set the mosh pit into a frenzy. Next, Blood Monolith delivered a chaotic study in hostility unbound. Riding a knife’s edge between death and grind, they stormed through songs from their monstrous debut, The Calling Of Fire, combining corporeal aggression with ballistic speed.
Stepping up when Italian death band Fulci faced visa issues, Austin, Texas doom metallers Spirit Adrift captivated the audience by crossing genres seamlessly. Opening with the mighty “Sorcerer’s Fate,” they used the power of the almighty riff to deliver a masterclass in fist-clenching metal music. Following them, Necrot brought a hellstorm of hook-laden, old-school death metal. Luca Indrio’s snarling growls and Chad Gailey’s furious drumming set the stage, while Sonny Reinhart’s melodic guitar solos channeled death metal greats like Chuck Schuldiner.
Finally, Cryptopsy took the stage to absolute pandemonium, opening with the neck-snapping mayhem of “Slit Your Guts.” The pit transformed into a cathartic maelstrom as the band tore through classics from None So Vile alongside eviscerating blast waves from their latest release, An Insatiable Violence. Backed by a mesmerizing barrage of strobe lights and smoke, Cryptopsy’s stellar performance capped off a most epic concert experience.
