A night of crushing doom and ripping death to start the new year in Hamtramck with Centenary, Blind Haven, Monolithic Architecture, and Room 101.

Death and Doom at The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary in Hamtramck, the finest heavy music venue in the world, hosted a celebration of death and doom on Friday, January 3rd. The lineup, stacked like a wall of Marshall cabinets from floor to ceiling, featured some of the heaviest bands in Michigan, if not the world. Joining forces for this evening were Room 101, Monolithic Architecture, Blind Haven, and Centenary. Thanks to Corey of Doom Dealer Productions, we were treated to several hours of massive metal music.

Room 101

What I’m going to call Death and Doom Fest 2025 started with Room 101. They unleashed a blast wave of bludgeoning doom and post-metal misanthropy. Tunes such as “Sightless” and “Acolyte” affirm the menacing darkness combined with unfathomable force that Room 101 brings to bear.

Monolithic Architecture

Creating a seismic soundscape of epic proportions was Monolithic Architecture. During their performance, we witnessed the death of stars. Monolithic Architecture captures the rage of eons through concussive guitar blasts and pulverizing drums. The heaviness of this band is beyond a scale that our minds can comprehend. The worm turns to the beat of this band.

Blind Haven

Andy Owen (drums) shared before their set that Blind Haven’s performance would focus on new music. By the Lord of the Riff, these songs are truly monstrous works of ungodly heft. Blind Haven had all their tones dialed into perfection. The bass and drums hit like a broadside collision with a freight train. The vocals roared with the undying malice of the void. Meanwhile, the savage snarl of the guitar brought us to our knees in reverence to the riff.

Centenary

Culminating this spectacular night of music was the furious chainsaw death of Centenary. Delivering unrelenting death metal that effortlessly grinds bone into dust, the stage became the scene of aural horror. Hammering drums and bass fueled the maelstrom of sawing guitars and hellish vocals. Centenary blasted classics such as “Orange Barrel Autopsy” and new hits like “Salem’s Rot,” all of which received headbanging approval.
