Chelsea’s Rumpus Room rocks with raw power as Ladyship Warship kicks out the jams at Sounds & Sights on Thursday Night.
Chelsea Sounds & Sights Rocking at the Rumpus Room
A sure sign of summer is the annual Chelsea Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights. For over 40 years, starting on the first Thursday in June and running through July, the streets of Chelsea buzz with chalk art, performers of magic and stunts, a silent disco, art workshops, and most importantly (at least to me) music. Of course, all the downtown shops and restaurants have great deals on food and beverages.
As you wander downtown, the music is everywhere. There is something for everyone, from classic rock and oldies to singer-songwriters, bluegrass, and country. On this superbly sunny Thursday, we enjoyed roots rock from Billy Mack & the Juke Joint Johnnies over at Palmer Commons. As we strolled down to Middle Street, the rippling waves of bluegrass tantalized us thanks to the North Creek Fiddlers.
All of this is thanks to the awesome crew of volunteers gathered by the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce to keep this event running like clockwork. It takes a boatload of cash to make Sound & Sights on Thursday nights hum. Once again, Rick Taylor Reinhart Realtors is the presenting sponsor this year. Diamond sponsors include Art Moehn Chevy, Chelsea State Bank, Chelsea Hospital, Eder & Diver Insurance, and Jiffy Mix. Thank you, sponsors; you know how to rock!
The Rumpus Room stage ROCKS
Dear reader, I love music. I realize that many of you know this and are like, “Ok..thanks, Mr. Obvious” I get supercharged when I get a chance to explore new music and celebrate the fantastic local music we have in Michigan. What makes Chelsea Sounds & Sights stand out is the diversity of music. Sounds & Sights ups the ante this year with a new rock stage at the Rumpus Room.
On the new Rumpus Room stage, you get to really rock out. Loud, proud, foot-stomping, heart pounding, screaming with passion, rock music. Rock music that sets the hairs on your arm dancing as a distorted guitar charges the air with a chugging power chord—hard charging music where the bass and drums thunder inside you.
Do you want to know what else makes the Rumpus Room stage rock? Michigan craft beer and pizza. Oh yes, friends, Jet’s in Chelsea (which includes the Rumpus Room) has awesome pizza and a huge selection of Michigan craft beer. Let me tell you, the rock music tastes even better with a Michigan craft beer in hand.
Ladyship Warship
Tonight we get into a double dose of vital rock music thanks to Detroit’s own Ladyship Warship. Stripping rock down to the essential drums and guitar, Ladyship Warship lays the hot wires of rock music bare. If you are new to the band, Ladyship Warship is Kristin Lyn (drums) and EZ Meyers (guitars).
With the sun shining bright and a beer in hand, we let the waves of rock wash over us. We enjoyed the gritty power of “Possum Nova” and the jangling thump of “High Water.” I nearly lost my mind as the psychedelic masterpiece “Abyss Stares Back” wove a hypnotic and mystical web. The sound from the stage was crisp and powerful. With the controls set for the heart of the sun, we blazed on a voyage with Ladyship Warship.
As folks finished dinner at Jet’s or the nearby Grateful Crow, the gravitational sounds of Ladyship Warship would pull them in. Particularly captivating was Ladyship Warship’s cover of Nick Cave’s “Higgs Boson Blues.” If ever a band could do that song justice, it is Ladyship Warship. For two hours, we feasted on a delicious rock and roll stew. Satiated, we basked in the setting sun as the echoes of the amplifiers rang in our heads.
If you missed this evening of rock at Sounds & Sights over at the Rumpus Room stage, have no fear. The stage has many more great local rock bands going all summer long. Be sure to check out the Sounds & Sights page and then get over to Chelsea next Thursday night.
