Chelsea Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights

This streak of outstanding summer weather falling perfectly on Chelsea Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights has been incredible. The town was once again humming with plenty of smiling faces as I raced around town to listen to some of the bands and grab a few photos. As the summer hits its stride, Chelsea nears the end of their fantastic summer music and art series. There will be one more Thursday night show and then the grand finale with the Sounds and Sights festival. If you haven’t made it to Chelsea for the festival and are wondering what all the fuss is about, check out our story from last year.

As a fan of heavy rock music accented with psychedelic vibes, I couldn’t wait to check out the Rumpus Room stage. The reason for my excitement is the thundering hooves of Detroit’s Warhorses filling my soul with their sonic grooves.

Warhorses

Last year, Warhorses had to find shelter from the storm inside the Rumpus Room. Today, the sun was in command as the band took the stage. For those who had been to the Ladyship Warship show on June 30th, you may have experienced a little deja vu as Kristin Lyn (drums) and EZ Myers (guitar) are in Ladyship as well as Warhorses. Rounding out the herd for Warhorses is Mike Alexander (vocals) and Nathan Lemiller (bass).

Together, this band wields unlimited sonic power, which they craft into songs rich with layers of rhythmic muscle, undulating riffs, and evocative vocals. Using punchy bass and concussive drums, the rhythmic waves within the music could be felt as well as heard. EZ’s guitar soared within the waves and heightened the emotional impact of each song. Leading the thunderous charge, Mike’s impassioned vocals stirred the soul as we witnessed the music flowing through him and his bandmates.

Warhorses’s set include a number of tunes from the fantastic Shadow Gold album, including “Killing,” “Sound of Thunder,” and “Desintegración.” Each of these tunes was so powerful that the stage lost power into the second tune on the first set. Mike from iQ Audio quickly got the power back, and Warhorses charged on. They included a few new tunes in their set, and word on the street is that they are heading into the studio soon.

The 3rd Chapter

Playing a wide range of crowd favorites on Middle Street was The 3rd Chapter. I dropped by in time to hear them play a fantastic cover of Johnny Cash. The band covers everything in between, from Sam & Dave to Matchbox 20. The 3rd Chapter is the perfect compliment to kicking back with a beer and hanging out with friends.

Big L and Code Blu

If you’ve been to the Chelsea Sounds and Sights festival, then I’m sure you’ve heard the stellar sounds of Big L and Code Blu. On this Sounds and Sights on Thursday nights, Big L was putting on a master class in soul and blues music with a shot of rocking spice over at Palmer Commons. The lawn was full of folks soaking up the sun and the luscious tones of Big L and Code Blu. In addition to some fabulous covers, Big L played a few originals, including “My Type,” which is simmering, sultry, and smooth. Do not miss this band when you get the chance to hear them live.
