BBQ and Cornhole: Jackson Unites for Special Olympics Athletes

JACKSON, Mich. — The air was filled with the irresistible aroma of barbecued ribs and the competitive clinks of cornhole bags at the American One Event Center in Jackson. This wasn’t just any gathering; it was the 2nd annual “Barbecuing for the Athletes” competition barbecue fundraiser, paired with a lively cornhole tournament, all designed to support Special Olympics Michigan Area 19 athletes.

Barbecuing for Special Olympics

We discovered this fantastic event through our involvement with Experience Jackson, the county’s visitor’s bureau. During their monthly meeting supporting Jackson area event organizers, we met Randy Coleman, the director of Area 19 for the Special Olympics Michigan. When he described the event, the excitement was contagious. We immediately rearranged our calendar to attend on June 15, 2024.

The Judges: A Diverse Panel

Selecting the judges for such a vibrant event wasn’t easy, but it was done with care and enthusiasm. Among them were Justin Brady, a member of a world championship barbecue team from Memphis, and Rep. Kathy Schmaltz. Her involvement underscored the community’s dedication to inclusivity and support for Special Olympics.

The panel also included Tim Hileman, CEO of Special Olympics Michigan, Earl Poleski, Jackson County Commissioner, and an honorary judge, Chris Hilder, a Special Olympics Michigan Area 19 athlete. Their diverse backgrounds brought a unique perspective to the judging process, ensuring that each plate of ribs was evaluated with expertise and passion. We can’t forget Owen Stetler and Terry Coleman. 

The Competitors and Winners

The BBQ competition was fierce and flavorful, featuring a mix of enthusiastic backyard barbecue teams and seasoned competitors from sanctioned events. Drum roll, please! And the competitors and winners are:

  • Joshua Leix – 1st Place for best baby back ribs
  • Mathew McDowell – 2nd Place for best baby back ribs
  • Howie’ Smoken’ BBQ- 3rd Place for best baby back ribs
  • Chris Schweikert – Winner of 1st Responder Division – Southern Michigan Prison
  • Lake Boys Barbecue – People’s Choice
  • Girls Gang
  • Mark DeNato
  • Art Bamm

Randy shared that the judges received training from the head judge, Justin Brady, before the assessment started. The judges evaluated the ribs on appearance, texture, and taste.

After tasting my second rib, I wondered if the quality of the meat varied. All the ribs were sourced from A & A Market, the best meat market in Jackson. The barbecue teams participated in a rib raffle to select their ribs, with the winner getting the first pick.

Cornhole for a Cause

Alongside the barbecue competition, the Federation Cornhole Club partnered to host the Michigan State Amateur Cornhole Tournament, drawing over 200 participants.

Tim Shufflin, a board member of the Federation Cornhole Club, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “Number one, Special Olympics is starting to get into cornhole. This is going to be the year they blast off. We want to be a part of that and raise every dollar we can to create enthusiasm for these great athletes.” They donated 100% of their registration fees to Special Olympics Michigan Area 19 (Jackson County).

A Special Division

In a special inclusion initiative, the Federation Cornhole coordinators created a blind draw Special Olympics Athlete Division. This division paired Special Olympics Michigan Area 19 athletes with Federation Cornhole members in doubles teams. The single elimination tournament was not only a highlight of the day but also a step towards making cornhole an official sport within Special Olympics Michigan.

Funds for the Future

All funds from this event will support the athletes by providing practice venues, competition uniforms, upgraded sports equipment, and covering transportation and registration costs for various competitions. Special Olympics is free for all athletes, ensuring that neither they nor their families ever have to pay to participate. Remarkably, all Area 19 Management Team members and coaches are volunteers.

Looking Ahead

With the success of this year’s event, plans are already underway for next year’s fundraiser. The sense of community, support, and fun experienced at this year’s “Barbecuing for the Athlete” event promises even greater things to come.
