As the sun began to set on the beer garden at Dark Horse Brewing, The Harmed Brothers added a warm glow to the evening.

On Wednesday nights the beer garden at Dark Horse Brewing in Marshall turns into a concert hall as they welcome local and national acts to share their music with fans and enjoy some tasty beer. On this gloriously warm evening, The Harmed Brothers from Oregon and Tom VandenAvond from Wisconsin graced the stage.

Tom VandenAvond

Tom VandenAvond got the nights entertainment started with Alex Salcido accompanying him on the banjo. Tom is a singer-songwriter with a voice that reminds you of John Prine. His music was soulful with the quiet cadence of the Great Lakes. After a couple of tunes, he invited local guitarist Alvin Lautzenheiser to add a little blues on a few songs. Apparently, Alvin keeps his Gibson and a Fender tweed amp handy for just such an occasion. Stop by the gallery for more pictures of Tom’s performance.

The Harmed Brothers

With darkness creeping in fast, the Harmed Brothers got up on the stage. They call their music “indie-grass” which is a fun way to describe their sound. They reminded me of the Avett Brothers and Trampled By Turtles. The vocal melodies of Ray Vietti (guitar) and Alex Salcido (banjo) are rich and refreshing. They were taking requests from the audience and quiet a few people took them up on the offer. Mr. Lautzenheiser was invited back to the stage to jam with the Harmed Brothers on a couple of tunes. Be sure to check out the gallery for more pictures of the Harmed Brothers.

The fine folks at Dark Horse do a great job of bringing music to their patrons. The Harmed Brothers with Tom VandenAvond make for an exceptional evening of music. With summer waning, there is still time to make it out to Dark Horse, enjoy a beer, and hear some outstanding music.
