Selden Standard – A great meal in Detroit

by | Jan 30, 2015 | Food

After working up an appetite wandering around at the Detroit Urban Craft show, we headed over to Selden Standard. WOW! How in the hell do they make cauliflower taste that good.

After about a year of construction, Selden Standard opened this past November (2014) and is located on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Selden in Detroit. Its a pretty popular place as we arrived just after they opened at 5pm and there was a wait for tables. That was fine with us as the bar looked really inviting.

Selden Standard – A look inside

The first thing you notice is how attractive and sleek the interior is. Blonde woodwork accents on the ceiling matching up with bar and dining counters. The hanging lights add a warm touch. Street facing windows provide great natural lighting.

You can see the cooks busy at work at the dining counter where I met these nice ladies who were in town to check out Selden Standard and visiting relatives for the holidays. I’m thinking they had the best seats in the house.

Michigan food, Michigan beer

We had read before visiting that Selden Standard works hard to locally source their food and use what is available seasonally. This also applies to beer as we happily found Dark Horse and Founders on tap. Brenda was feeling adventurous and let the bartenders whip something up for her. It looked a little scary, but it was delicious.

Awesome Cauliflower

At this point you are probably wondering “Is this guy going to talk about the food or what???”. That brings me back to the cauliflower. I really have no idea how you can make such a simple (and somewhat boring) vegetable this damn tasty. Selden Standards serves up a variety of small plates. This way you can mix and match as you like. You can also share some with the folks you are with. We went with the roasted cauliflower, squash flatbread, and sliding a bit from our normal vegan lifestyle, the tuna crudo. Everything tasted wonderful. I know I keep going on and on about cauliflower, but it was gone before I could get a picture. The flatbread was outstanding and the tuna was delicate and delicious when combined with the blood orange.

Our visit to Selden Standard was superb. The staff who waited on us were very friendly and engaging which added to our enjoyment. We have more pictures in our gallery. If you’ve been to Selden Standard, leave a comment and let us know what you thought. As always, you can keep in touch with us by signing up for our email or you can find us on FacebookTwitter and Tumblr. Bon Appetit!
