Rocking out the Parliament Room at Otus Supply

A few months back, I got a message from Thom Bloom at Otus Supply asking me for recommendations on rock bands to play at the Parliament Room at Otus Supply. After a moment of being very flattered that Thom would reach out to me, my mental Rolodex of killer local rock bands flipped open to Warhorses, Edison Hollow, and Distilled Tongues.

I figured each band offered a unique sound as well as their own dynamic stage shows that would combine for one hell of a night of rock at the Parliament Room. Thom got me in touch with Danann Griggs, their production director, and she did her magic to get the bands on board. A night of rock was set, and I was stoked. I’d been wanting to check out Otus Supply and the Parliament room for some time and had not made it. Now the stars were aligned, and I’d get to share dinner with Brenda and friends at Otus Supply, then hang out with some of my favorite bands in the Parliament room.

Distilled Tongues

If you are going to a show in the Parliament Room at Otus Supply, definitely get there early and get dinner at Otus. The food and service are outstanding. Brenda and I got pizza, Angie tried out the chili, and Jeff got the chicken. We ended our meals with full bellies and smiles on our faces.

The smiles got a lot wider when the music kicked in from Distilled Tongues. There is much to love about this powerhouse trio. Sean’s muscular bass and soaring vocals make each song captivating. When you add in Mike’s deadly riffs, lyrical solos matched with powerful vocals, your experience is transformed from excitement into awe. This onslaught of pure rock fury gets even better with Jeremy killing the drums while wearing an infectious smile. Once again, I find myself transfixed by the music of Distilled Tongues and eager for the next dose.

Edison Hollow

As usual, Edison Hollow is off the hook. These guys are not only superb musicians; they are true performers. I imagine that the early shows from The Who or Van Halen were similar to an Edison Hollow gig. When Aaryn (drums) and Dave (bass) kicked into the pulsing beat of Audioslave’s “Cochise,” I stared in amazement. When Tyler (guitars/vocals) belted out the opening lyric, “Well, I’ve been watching; While you’ve been coughing,” sounding even stronger than Chris Cornell, my mouth fell open in stupefied wonder.

I’m not quite sure the stage at the Parliament room was ready for the hurricane of rock unleashed by Edison Hollow. In fact, I thought that Jordon (lead guitar) would be going through the stage floor as he jumped and stomped while headbanging like a madman amped up on a case of Redbull. Edison Hollow put on a blazing rock show that should not be missed.

Warhorses

The start was a little rough for our friends in Warhorses as the sound man battled a bit of feedback and low end hum. Thankfully about two songs in the sound sorted out. Now we could dig into the majestic riffs that only Warhorses can provide.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the music from Warhorses is mesmerizing. I tried to give Brenda and our friends Jeff and Angie some sense of what they would experience as this was their first time hearing the band. I think I said that the Warhorses are like a heavy-hitting trance of David Bowie. Nathan’s thrumming bass and Kristin’s driving drums give the music weighty insistence. EZ’s guitar burns on the edge of madness while Mike’s vocals captivate and bewitch. The Warhorses always fascinate me, and tonight in the Parliament Room at Otus Supply was no exception.

I honestly lost track of the Warhorses setlist. Perhaps it was the fog machine that seemed to be at maximum density that caused me to lose my station, or it was the scintillating music; perhaps it was both. I do remember yelling my head off when they kicked into “Sound of Thunder.” Thinking back, I suppose the point is to lose yourself in the music. Like a summer storm, Warhorses soaked our souls in a deluge of rock and capped off a great night of music.
