Earthless

Earthless are back in the Detroit area to support their latest masterpiece of improvisational rock called Night Parade of One Hundred Demons which came out on Jan 28th of 2022, via Nuclear Blast. After having hit parts of the west coast and Europe, Earthless brings their epic tales to the Motor City with a stop at the Sanctuary in Hamtramck. Joining them are local greats The Lucid Furs and Electric Huldra.

Thanks Chad

My love affair with Earthless began in March of 2018, and I blame Chad Houts for my obsession. I met Chad at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe when he played guitar in the phenomenal stoner rock band Bonehawk. He is an incredibly easy person to love in his own right as he is completely down to earth and passionate about music. I’m nearly positive that Chad had mentioned Earthless right before their Black Heaven album came out. Upon hearing Black Heaven, I felt an immediate need to hear more and experience this band live. I’ve since been blessed with seeing Earthless at El Club and Deluxx Fluxx. I even enjoyed the incredible opportunity to learn from guitarist Isaiah Mitchell via guitar lessons over Skype. Thank you, Chad for sharing your music and the music you love. Because of you, I’m now an Earthless fan for life.

Electric Huldra

Kick-starting tonight’s show is Electric Huldra. They put on a great show at Fuzz Fest 7, and I was definitely down for a repeat. Their latest self-titled album is an examination of pure rock fury. Electric Huldra showcased their sonic punch with tunes such as “Dirty Boots,” “Dreamin,” and “Rock and Roll Pariah.” Their set was a high-powered rock show with fist-pumping rhythm, raging guitars, and soaring vocals. Electric Huldra capped off their set with a killer cover of “Rock Bottom” from the legendary UFO.

The Lucid Furs

I never get tired of listening to The Lucid Furs or catching a live performance. After seeing them at Fuzz Fest 7, the band did a short mini-tour of the Midwest. While it seems improbable that the band could get better within a week of seeing them, I think they did. A couple of shows seem to have put a scalpel edge on their razor riffs. Tunes such as “Five Finger Disco” off their latest Damn! That Was Easy were infectious and rowdy. Karen (vocals) bantered with the fans, and the entire band transmitted the energy of their music. Based on the roar of applause between songs, The Lucid Furs clearly won over the Earthless crowd with their fire-breathing Detroit freak rock.

A Night Parade of One Hundred Demons Live

The latest album from Earthless is called A Night Parade of One Hundred Demons. It is a musical exploration of “Hyakki yagyō,” which is the night when all supernatural beings break into our world and unleash chaos. You either stay inside waiting for the demons to pass or risk death among the hordes outside. This album, created by Isaiah Mitchell (guitar & vocals), Mike Eginton (bass), and Mario Rubalcaba (drums), is hard rock improvisation and adventure at its finest.

Tonight at The Sanctuary, Earthless played for us the entire Night Parade of One Hundred Demons album. When I first heard this album, I marveled at the nuances within Parts 1 and 2 of the title track as well as the other epic tune called “Death To The Red Sun.” With all the tempo changes and mood swings, I wondered how this record would translate live. As I stood at the edge of the stage, Earthless showed me.

Part 1 of Night Parade live begins with delicate echoed guitars from Isaiah as Mario uses timpani sticks to create a shimmering rain of cymbals. Mike adds some very understated bass, and then all hell breaks loose as the demons take center stage. The drum crashes give way to a transcendental musical meditation as Mike and Mario lock-in. This is Isaiah’s queue to let it rip.

Spellbinding

While the light show was functional, it didn’t really capture the dynamics of the music from Earthless. Thankfully, you could watch the band and get lost in the mastery of their live performance. I’d spend a minute watching Isaiah make his guitar sing, then turn toward Mike, who effortlessly syncs up with Mario as the rhythms ebb, flow, crash, and burn. Watching them perform this music is spellbinding.

It was intriguing to watch the visual queues as Earthless performed. Each member of the band would clearly be consumed by the music as they played, yet you could see the glances from Mike over to Isaiah or Isaiah over to Mario as the various transitions in the songs take place. They would wander in a forest of improvisation, then find each other to bring the song home.

It seemed like Earthless had only just begun, and then they were thanking us for coming out. They waved with sweat dripping and made their way off stage. After a few minutes of calls from the crowd, they took the stage and ripped into their cover of “Cherry Red” by The Groundhogs. This super song of heavy psych was the perfect nightcap for the show.
